Swadeshi

Swadeshi is not a policy we adopt because of certain compulsions. It is not merely an economic or technological industrial concept. Nor is it a negative or exclusivist approach towards other countries or people. Swadeshi is in fact the natural and necessary self-expression of a people. The basic assumption involved in Swadeshi is that every nation has a soul and an identity and it is its bounden duty to manifest the same in every walk of life. That is its destiny. Hindus have never shut our doors and lived in splendid isolation. We have the entire world, nay the entire universe before our eyes and look upon it as a family. We have the vision to declare that our “Swadesha is all the three worlds taken together” (“Swadesho Bhuvanatrayam”). The term ‘swadeshi’ was used in regular discourse from the time of the Partition of Bengal in 1905. However, the eminent historian RC Majumdar says in his India’s freedom struggle that the concept wasprevalent right from the middle of the 19th century. Gopal Hari Deshmukh (Lokahitavadi), Bhola Nath Chandra, Jogendra Chandra Ghosh and Maharishi Dayananda were among its earliest proponents. The first bonfire of foreign clothes that shook the british Empire was carried out by Veer Savarkar in his student days with the blessings of Lokamanya Tilak. The second phase of its propagation was by Gandhi In modern times, Sswadeshi movement is meant to establish a socio-economic and political order based on the Hindu view of life and value system, a movement against Westernization with its dangerous spread of vulgar consumerism.

The idea of Swadeshi can be successful only when we are strong in all the sectors of economy. Today India's growth is talked about due to IT and IT enabled services export. What if the countries currently importing services from us start using the same philosphy??

It's a misconception that countries are importing services from us, it's the MNCs who are importing services from us. And mind you, irrespective whether you believe in Swadeshi or not, they do. After americans started loosing out their jobs to outsiders, they made a war-cry and many MNCs suspended job relocations to India, in particular when US economy/IT-sector was going through a down-turn.

They are hiring our services only because they want cheaper way to feed into their consumerism, it's a matter of their need for cheap labor and our need for employment coming together.

How many MNCs's india operations are headed by indians? Most of them are non-Indians, why? Is india short of executive talent?
How many of them do core R&D work here in India? Very few.

Everyone embibes a concept of swadeshi, and in contrast we Indians tend to be swayed by our misconception of Universalism.
